Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (ot.mn) – Oyu Tolgoi recently donated a set of washing machines and dryers to the Lotus Orphanage in Ulaanbaatar. The idea for the donation came from an Oyu Tolgoi employee who used to volunteer at the centre for children.

Earlier this year, Oyu Tolgoi Underground Management made the decision to replace seven washers and dryers at Shaft one with more water efficient machines that were also better suited for the washing that needed to take place at site. In November 2011, Yesukhei Chuluunbat, who at one time worked as a volunteer at an orphanage in UB, suggested contacting this orphanage with the idea of donating the old washers and dryers. Oyu Tolgoi General Manager Damian Rogers gave permission for the machines to be donated. From that point, Shaft one Redpath manager, Doug Wheeler and Redpath Human Resources superintendent, Eileen Olivier got the process going.

Yesukhei served as a link between the Oyu Tolgoi team making the donation and the group at Lotus:
“I spoke with Battsetseg, the manager of the Lotus Orphanage, this afternoon. I gave her a brief idea of what we are trying to do and she was extremely happy about the news of possible donation.  In fact, she pointed out that washing the kids clothes has been one of their biggest challenges ever since they started.”

Building on this positive experience, Wheeler has asked employees at Shaft one to think of the children this holiday season and consider making a donation of winter clothes. Any coats, hats and mittens collected from the Redpath team will be donated to children in need in Mongolia. A programme dedicated on these donations should be in fully launched by January 2012.
