Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Oyu Tolgoi is pleased to announce that the first trainees on the Workforce Employment Project have now commenced their industrial work placements. The students are part of the 36 billion MNT Workforce Employment Project sponsored by Oyu Tolgoi.
Over 700 students have successfully found on-the-job training with a range of employers. Many of them found their placements at Mongolia’s first Employers’ Forum, organised by Oyu Tolgoi in March.
Allan Green, Training Manager at Oyu Tolgoi said: “We are really pleased that so many of these trainees have found work placements, particularly as some of them will turn into permanent jobs. We know there is a general skills shortage in Mongolia and we are working with the government to help address it. So it’s great to see these students moving onto the next stage in their training.”
The Workforce Employment Project is jointly implemented and managed by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare.
Its objective is to train unemployed Mongolians in a range of skills that are currently in short supply. Through the scheme students can train to become electricians, welders, heavy machinery operators, tailors, dressmakers, railroad workers, road construction workers and more.
The students spend the first part of their training at TVET institutions around the country before starting a placement within their chosen industry.
Another 2, 300 students are now starting their courses. A second Employers Forum is planned for the end of June.
