Fire incident at the Oyu Tolgoi site

Oyu Tolgoi, Umnugobiaimag, Mongolia – This morning a fire occurred in the headframe of Shaft # 2 at the Oyu Tolgoi mine in the South Gobi. The head frame is the building on the surface that will contain the hoists for the shaft.  The fire has been totally extinguished and nobody was injured.

All the relevant authorities, including the Khanbogd police department, the Umnugobiaimag’s Emergency Authority, the State Emergency Authority and Special Agencies were notified about the incident. An investigation into the incident has begun.

Shaft # 2 will be 96 metres high when construction is complete and will be used for transporting ore from the underground mine. It is currently 30 metres high.
