Oyu Tolgoi guarantees further financing to maintain local healthcare services for Umnugobi residents

Dalanzadgad, Umnugobi – Keith Marshall, President and Chief Executive Officer of Oyu Tolgoi LLC, announced today that Oyu Tolgoi has extended its support for the Doctors’ Housing and Sponsorship Programme throughout 2011 to maintain rural access to quality healthcare throughout the South Gobi Region.

The company has allocated an additional 16.1 million MNT to extend the community healthcare initiative, increasing Oyu Tolgoi’s commitment to the program to a total of 1.0 billion MNT since 2005.

“Dependable, accessible healthcare is an integral part of the foundation of sustainable communities:” Mr. Marshall said.

“We know from our employees, our neighbours and community leaders throughout the region that having professional healthcare readily available for routine and emergency treatments is greatly appreciated, enhances the well being of individuals and families and contributes to the quality of life and sense of community.”

Mr. Marshall said that Oyu Tolgoi’s continuation of support for the programme through 2011 will ensure the funding for 20 doctors to live and work in Umnugobi’s soum centres, where they also can provide health and medical services to residents of isolated areas.

Since its establishment in 2005 the Doctors’ Housing and Sponsorship Programme has constructed medical clinics and doctors’ residences in 13 soums of Umnugobi province and funded the salaries and expenses of more than 20 doctors from Ulaanbaatar and across Mongolia to bring their medical knowledge and expertise to Gobi residents.

Since 2005, Oyu Tolgoi has initiated various health-sector projects to support and develop accessible health services in Umnugobi province. In addition to the Doctors’ Housing and Sponsorship Programme, Oyu Tolgoi also has donated ambulances, dental equipment, x-ray and ultrasound imaging systems and medical supplies to various Umnugobi healthcare organisations.

Contributions by Oyu Tolgoi to Umnugobi’s healthcare sector during the past five years now total more than 4.6 billion MNT.
