Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Oyu Tolgoi participated in the 'Safety First' conference and exhibition organised by the Mongolian National Mining Association on 22 – 23 March as a 'Gold Sponsor'. Oyu Tolgoi representatives made a detailed presentation on project safety during the theoretical-practical conference.
Mahoney D'Alterio, Senior Safety Consultant at Oyu Tolgoi, said “The most valuable resource at Oyu Tolgoi is its personnel and employees. Our goal is to create jobs free of accidents; injury and disease where everybody can go back home safe and healthy every day. For this purpose, we are introducing a health, safety and environmental management system directed at improving safety for the first time in Mongolia”.
Large national companies such as Energy Resources, Erdenet Mining Corporation, Oyu Tolgoi and various government organisations including Ministries of Minerals and Energy, Social Welfare and Labour all participated in the conference and discussed ways to ensure work safety in the mining sector.
S.Davaanyam, head of Work Safety and Health at the Erdenet Mining Corporation, said “There is a Mongolian saying a horn which grows later is longer than the ear which grew first'. The Erdenet Corporation has a lot to learn from Oyu Tolgoi, Boroo Gold and Energy Resources, companies which follow the latest Western standards on work safety and health”.
Oyu Tolgoi is working to introduce international health and safety standard ISO 14001:2004 in the Mongolian mining sector by late 2012.
