Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – A ceremony to grant certificates to 40 of Mongolia’s most promising students who have been awarded Oyu Tolgoi LLC’s 2013-2014 National scholarships took place today. In 2010, Oyu Tolgoi LLC together with Ministry of Education, Culture and Science signed a Memorandum of Understanding stipulating that a programme to develop a highly competent national workforce for the Mongolian mining industry would be developed. The programme is now in the third year of implementation and much has been accomplished, including the issuing of scholarships to dozens of students nationwide.
In a speech at the ceremony to grant certificates to the students, G.Batsukh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Oyu Tolgoi LLC said: “Oyu Tolgoi is not just a mining company, but also a sponsor of educated and intelligent people who are the creators of Mongolia’s future wealth. You now only need to fulfill the beliefs of your parents and Oyu Tolgoi and study well. I am fully confident that your hard work and success will inspire those who work hard day and night at the mine.”
L.Luvsanjamts, Director of the Department of Monitoring, Evaluation, and Internal Audit of the Ministry of Education and Science said: “We are implementing many reforms in the education sector. On behalf of the Ministry of Education and Science, I would like to express our gratitude to Oyu Tolgoi LLC for responsibly fulfilling your obligations in the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2010 as part of our reform policy. Let’s take lessons from Mongolian proverb which says 'Man is the master of his own destiny!' ”
The three stage qualification for Oyu Tolgoi international and national scholarships began as traditionally in September, with 35 students qualifying. Twenty four of these students were from the University of Science and Technology, eight from the Mongolian National University and the remainder students from the Technology School and Agricultural University in Orkhon and Darkhan Uul aimags. Five students qualified for international scholarships and will study mining and geology in the US, Canada and Australia.
Winner of one of the national scholarships, 3rd year student of the University of Science and Technology B.Batzaya said: “In my view, Oyu Tolgoi scholarships are the best scholarship programme in Mongolia. While I am very pleased to qualify for this scholarship program, I also understand very well that with it comes a great responsibility. I will strive to become a good professional in the future”.
Winner of one of the International scholarships, University of Science and Technology graduate M.Chinbat said: “I am grateful to all of you for coming here to share this very important step at the start of my career. I am pleased to say that this Oyu Tolgoi programme is a very far sighted policy to support the young generation of Mongolia”.
Oyu Tolgoi scholarships cover tuition fees, monthly stipends, dormitory fees and travel costs for students. If the student studies well, the scholarship continues until graduation and an opportunity is given for a paid internship at Oyu Tolgoi.
