Vocational Training Centre project serves as joint project management lesson
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (ot.mn) – Oyu Tolgoi is preparing to build a new vocational training centre in Nalaikh. This location is expected to be a Technological School of Excellence, representing the commitment Oyu Tolgoi has made to the Mongolian people and the Government of Mongolia in the Investment Agreement.
In the agreement, Oyu Tolgoi committed to spending 110 billion MNT (85 million USD) on training and education over a five year period. Related construction projects include two new schools and four educational centres and colleges, which are currently being upgraded.
The construction at Nalaikh is being spearheaded by 13 year old NewCon LLC. This three building complex is the construction company’s largest project and its plans include a block of classrooms, a student dormitory, living quarters for teachers and an open sports stadium complex.
Design plans are expected to be finalised this month and it will include a set of semi-circular structures never before built in this way in Mongolia. Both the design and the process will serve as guides for future projects of this nature.
We are working together with Oyu Tolgoi to bring better, more developed technology and designs to our projects,” commented NewCon LLC Managing Director and Structural Engineer N. Choibalsan. “Prior to working with Oyu Tolgoi one year ago, our projects were very task oriented and we were left to accomplish the task on our own. The collaborative process in this project, which shares best practices has been valuable – it is something we will look to bring to other projects in the future.”
Officials at Oyu Tolgoi share this sentiment.
We work with a range of contractors, designers and architects to build the best training centres and educational institutions possible,” commented Ole Saeverud, Deputy Director for Special Projects at Oyu Tolgoi. “It is exciting to see projects like this taking shape because we know the benefit that it will bring to the youth of Mongolia.”
