Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Oyu Tolgoi, the gold and copper mine under development in the Umnugobi, yesterday announced it is sponsoring six athletes from Mongolia’s Paralympic Association. The athletes will be travelling to London later this year to take part in the Paralympic games.
At a press conference in central Ulaanbaatar attended by the Deputy Minister for Social Welfare and Labour, Nyamkhuu, Oyu Tolgoi Chairman, Batsukh.G, Oyu Tolgoi President and CEO, Cameron McRae, and Batdorj, Head of the Mongolian Paralympic Track and Field Association, the six athletes were praised for their dedication and commitment to sporting excellence.
Among those being sponsored is famous para-athlete Lkhagvajav, who, last week, was invited to meet the Mongolian President. The President honoured him for his great achievements at two Olympic Games, as well as his silver medal at the World Championships and his two gold medals at the Asian Championships.
Lkhagvajav, a blind marathon-runner, gave Oyu Tolgoi a framed jacket he had worn in international competitions as a gift.
Nyamkhuu said that he was, “delighted that Oyu Tolgoi, the company that performs such excellent social responsibility, is sponsoring our athletes and our association”. He said that the athletes were, “praying from the bottom of their hearts that they would deliver the best results”.
Batsukh.G said, “there are many ways that the efforts of these men complement our own attitudes here at Oyu Tolgoi. I know that later this year, these brave men will be visiting our staff both here and at site to discuss how important it is to be vigilant about safety, I am very grateful for that. Our philosophy of ‘safety first, safety last and safety always’ has really helped to develop a safety culture in Mongolia. It is one of the things our Mongolian contractors often thank us for”.
Cameron McRae said, “at Oyu Tolgoi, we are as committed to excellence and high achievement as those who aim for sporting greatness”.
