Oyu Tolgoi contributes to creating a national work force and technical specialists

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (ot.mn) Last Thursday, Oyu Tolgoi hosted the 3rd annual Best Supplier Award Ceremony “Gobi Gem”, and awarded its 20 best suppliers in areas ranging from safety to contribution to local economic development.

Under the motto “Human capital – wealth of Mongolia”, Oyu Tolgoi is investing in the Mongolian educational sector by implementing the largest-ever vocational training program in the country. Within the framework of this project, Oyu Tolgoi recognized and awarded its best supplier in terms of technical vocational training in 2011; “Trans West LLC”.

“Trans West LLC” was given the award due to its successful training program implemented in cooperation with the Mechanical Engineering School of Mongolia and the University of Science and Technology (MUST). “Trans West” initiated a heavy equipment and machinery operator program in which 30 students of the Mechanical Engineering School of the MUST were trained, and installed training equipment in two classrooms. The company’s trainees were involved in training at the Australian Queensland Institute of Advanced Training, and video-training materials on labor safety from this institute were translated into Mongolian. As a result, the Australian Queensland Institute of Advanced Training became the first foreign-invested vocational training center accredited by the Government of Mongolia. All these accomplishments led Oyu Tolgoi to recognize “Trans West” as “Best Supplier” in terms of its commitment to perform quality vocational training.

Chairman of the Oyu Tolgoi Board of Directors: “Oyu Tolgoi is investing MNT110 billion in a vocational training program that includes building 2 model universities and 3 vocational training centers in 5 cities across Mongolia. Also, 120 students will study at Mongolian universities and 30 at international universities with Oyu Tolgoi scholarships. I believe this training program will contribute significantly to the creation of Mongolian specialists”.

Oyu Tolgoi is building a Vocational Training Center in Khanbogd soum with the capacity to accommodate 150 students. A 350 million tugrug training program that provides various skills to the residents of Khanbogd has also been implemented in the soum.
