Oyu Tolgoi LLC commends Bats-Urguu LLC for an excellent safety record

Mongolian company completes 40,000 man-hours without Incident

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (ot.mn) – Oyu Tolgoi LLC recently recognised the significant safety record of Bats-Urguu LLC in constructing the Khanbogd Vocational Training Facility. Six employees were presented with safety awards at a local gathering in Khanbogd.

The vocational training facility was built by Bats-Urguu to an international quality standard within six months. In addition to the efficiency that Bats-Urguu brought to the project, the construction team placed a high value on maintaining a safe work environment. This is demonstrated by the fact that they have a perfect safety record of 40,000 man-hours without a single incident. Oyu Tolgoi strongly supports the creation of safe workplaces, and the company strives to achieve the overall objective of zero harm.

All this has occurred in a section of the Gobi desert, a location that had no existing construction support, is 600km from Ulaanbaatar and with total acceptance of Oyu Tolgoi LLC international standard construction and safety requirements.

Bats-Urguu Director, Batsaikhan J., expressed his appreciation to Oyu Tolgoi for conducting the recognition event, stating that he is grateful for what he and his employees have learned from the international standard requirements of Oyu Tolgoi LLC in the last six months. He intends to incorporate this philosophy within his company for all future projects.

The Khanbogd Vocational Training Facility is one part of Oyu Tolgoi's efforts to improve technical and vocational education and training in Mongolia. This facility is one of several projects to build, upgrade or expand training centres around the country. It further represents another milestone and fulfillment of Oyu Tolgoi's commitment made under the Investment Agreement.

Oyu Tolgoi is investing approximately 110 billion MNT (US$85 million) in training and education over a five year period – the largest investment in vocational training ever made in Mongolia. The company is supplying educational and training equipment worth 3.5 billion MNT to schools across Mongolia, and as part of this commitment, 30 welding simulators worth 1 billion MNT have already been delivered to 25 Technical and Vocational Education and Training schools. Program improvement is also an area of focus. In addition to building centres and donating equipment, Oyu Tolgoi will also be updating the curriculum and providing new learning technologies at these sites.
