Oyu Tolgoi awards Suppliers that uphold Health and Safety principles

 

Oyu Tolgoi will introduce world-class safety and environmental management standards in Mongolian mining sector

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (ot.mn) Oyu Tolgoi’s 3rd annual Supplier Recognition Award ceremony, known as Gobi Gem-2011 was held last week. The 20 best Oyu Tolgoi suppliers were recognized and awarded for their efforts in training the local workforce, and their valuable contribution to infrastructure and the economic development of Mongolia. Two awards singled out those companies that had best exhibited a commitment to health and safety.

We are proud to announce that the Aquaterra East Asia company was awarded ‘Most Improved’ in the area of Health and Safety in 2011. Aquaterra East Asia LLC has been working with Oyu Tolgoi providing consultancy services in water supply, environmental rehabilitation and development of hydrogeology, ground water, and surface water database models since 2010.

Hasu Megawatt LLC, which has been providing installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and all types of boilers and diesel electrical generators was awarded for its outstanding performance in the area of Health and Safety in 2011. Hasu Megawatt has ensured reliability and sustainable operations of electrical equipment and boilers and generators for Oyu Tolgoi for the past seven years. This Mongolian company with 510 employees at Oyu Tolgoi, has provided 819 million MNT products and services to Oyu Tolgoi last year.

Paul Gerber, Oyu Tolgoi Manager in charge of Health and Safety issues, said “our company ensures the health and safety of our employees at highest standards. These companies were given Supplier Excellence Awards not only for their contribution to the mine development work, but also for their achievements in employee health and safety and timely delivery of the services and products”.

Oyu Tolgoi is planning to fully introduce best international practices on safety management systems and international environmental management standards ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 by the middle of 2012.
