In recent times, the repair of water wells and pastureland irrigation in the Gobi have been almost forgotten due to a lack of funding and personnel. Herders are unable to use pastureland due to a lack of water. For this reason, Oyu Tolgoi LLC is repairing broken and unused old water wells under a Pastureland Management program. This work is carried out by experts from professional companies.
One of them is 'Us-Erdene' LLC, one of the pioneers in the Mongolian water industry. This company was founded in 1991 from the former state-owned hydrological exploration unit in Uvs province in western Mongolia. Since then, the company has been engaged in construction and drilling of water wells and work like upgrading of agricultural farm irrigation systems. Last year, the company won a tender announced by Oyu Tolgoi LLC to drill new deep water and hand-dug water wells for herders and to repair and restore eight existing deep water wells and fifteen hand dug wells in rural areas of Umnugobi province. The company has extensive previous history and experience in drilling water wells in Gobi provinces such as Dundgobi, Dornogobi and Gobi-Altai. For this reason, the company was able to complete the tasks to a very high standard and was selected as Oyu Tolgoi’s 'Supplier of the Month' in December 2013.
O.Altansukh, Deputy director of the 'Ust-Erdene' LLC says: “Our company has experienced professional staff. We are paying special attention to social well-being and the education of our workforce including training them abroad and within the country. We employ a total of 80 workers, including our assistant workers. In the future we want to complete large projects in the water sector based on a sound scientific basis.”
Experienced and professional organisations which specialise in hydrological work are very rare. Describing the work carried out in Umnugobi province, O.Altansukh said: “We have provided manuals on water well maintenance and protection for the herders whose water wells we have restored. At the herder’s request, we also set up dams around the wells in order to protect them from flooding and sand movement. We provide a ten year guarantee for the deep water wells.”
The company’s qualified drillers have restored about 300 wells in total.
