The Growth and Development of Gurvan Mankh

“We are very pleased that Oyu Tolgoi works to support local small and medium size enterprises, making a valuable contribution to local development” says Gurvan mankh’s manager T.Sumya.

To increase its customer base and year round operations, the company became an Oyu Tolgoi supplier in November 2011.

Among many thousands of suppliers providing products and services to the Mongolian mining company Oyu Tolgoi LLC, a large amount are local companies from the South Gobi. One of these is Gurvan mankh from Umnugovi aimag which produces pure water. The company was founded in 2006 and is the first of its kind in the aimag. The company produces pure water in 0.5 and 1.5 liter bottles and sells them locally.

A shortage of year round customers is one of the challenges facing the company. Gurvan mankh sells products to the tourist camps which operate in the South Gobi for only the three summer months, hindering year round, stable production. To increase its customer base and year round operations, the company became an Oyu Tolgoi supplier in November 2011.

Originally with a staff of three, the seasonal nature of the business and plummeting sales during winter lead to an annual freeze on production for months at a time. However, since becoming an Oyu Tolgoi supplier, the company moved to year-round production, providing employment stability for its workforce. This was a big step for the company which was able to expand its workforce to nine full time employees.

The company is now planning to expand the business further, moving from the current semi-automatic to a fully automated production line and an expansion of plant capacity.

“We are very pleased that Oyu Tolgoi works to support local small and medium size enterprises, making a valuable contribution to local development” says Gurvan mankh’s manager T.Sumya.

In order to promote and recognise the success of its suppliers, Oyu Tolgoi has a tradition of presenting Supplier of the month awards. Gurvan mankh was awarded the South Gobi Supplier of the Month award in February.
