At Oyu Tolgoi, we are committed to protecting and caring for human life and wellbeing and maintaining zero fatalities and conduct our operations under the motto “Zero harm”. As part of the initiative to share our safety culture with the public, Oyu Tolgoi has been cooperating with the National Police Agency for the third year on various road safety projects since 2019 to reduce the risk of deaths and injuries on the local roads.
In 2019-2020, Oyu Tolgoi co-organised the “No need to rush” and “Do not be a mule, play by the rules” campaigns with the National Police Agency to promote road safety and responsible driving, with a focus on rural intercity roads. We worked closely with police departments in all aimags and soums to raise public awareness through media campaigns and other proactive approaches and installed speedometers on the Choir, Darkhan and Selenge roads, where the most accidents caused by speeding were recorded.
In 2021, we continued the partnership under the “Let’s protect our future”, a two-month campaign to prevent traffic accidents with child victims and increase the usage of child seats for child passenger safety. As a result of the campaign, the total number of traffic accidents decreased by five per cent, injuries by 25.2 per cent and deaths by 33.3 per cent, whereas child injuries were down by one per cent and child deaths by 33.3 per cent. Given the effectiveness of the speedometers, we are also planning to install two more speedometers on local roads this October.
Armando Torres, Chief Executive Officer of Oyu Tolgoi, highlighted that: “I am greatly pleased to see our safety culture, a core value to protect each other from the preventable risks, is reflected in the campaigns to save many Mongolians from traffic accidents. I hope that our efforts in the last three years will bring life-changing positive impacts for years to come.”
It is possible to protect yourself, your loved ones and society as a whole from traffic accidents by implementing comprehensive risk prevention measurements and ensuring road safety. Together we can prevent the loss of precious lives in preventable situations!
About our cooperation:
- The National Police Agency and Oyu Tolgoi jointly initiated the “No Need to Rush” and “Do not Be a Mule, Play by the Rules” campaigns in 2019. According to the National Police Agency, traffic accidents decreased by 14.2 per cent last year compared to the previous year on the national level.
- The installation of speedometers on the road in Choir soum, Govisumber aimag, where accidents were common, has contributed to the shown reductions in road accidents.
