B.Solongo is one of thousand students in the city majoring in Environmental Use, Evaluation and Monitoring at the National University of Mongolia. Nowadays, students are seldom able to take advantage of proper study conditions, such as working only part-time, which is not common in Mongolia. Students usually depend on their parents and elder siblings or relatives for financial support.
B.Solongo had sought and explored scholarship opportunities for a long time when she came across the Oyu Tolgoi Scholarship Programme for study at local tertiary institutions. She said “I am from Darkhan-Uul aimag and the cost of living was very high when I relocated to Ulaanbaatar. I see my student peers encounter a similar problem; they commonly need money, even for conducting study research. As I am studying with a scholarship from Oyu Tolgoi, it is more advantageous as Oyu Tolgoi provides me with the full means to study effectively. Each month I receive an allowance so I do not have to worry about money. I even plan how to expand my opportunities with the money”. The scholarship covers all tuition fees, dormitory support, as well as a 200,000 MNT monthly stipend.
According to her, students must have zeal to study in their chosen subjects and that is the key for future achievement. Such a scholarship opportunity is open to all students and one of the main criteria for the scholarship is to have excellent grades. Moreover, applicants should explore scholarship information in different ways and be aware of the various requirements. Some students give up after failing an examination, but if a student fails an exam they should re-take it and then apply again after becoming better prepared.
She is seeking many avenues to grow professionally and improve her skills by participating in scientific conferences and doing apprenticeships at a mining project. She is also preparing her scholarship application to study abroad.
Skilled work force is the core of development for any country; therefore Oyu Tolgoi invests in the education programs vital for creating sustainable development of Mongolia.
As Mongolian folks say “For everyone who asks, receives but he who seeks, finds”. If students strive to study well as B.Solongo has, every one of them can have the possibility of receiving an academic opportunity.
