On the 31st October, Oyu Tolgoi Procurement team organised fire safety training at three Ulaanbaatar high schools. Students from grades nine to twelve learned about sources of fire, different types of fire and how to extinguish them, as well as types of fire extinguishers. As a result of the training, students learned to use the PASS method for fighting fires. PASS stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep. Following the training, 24 students were given fire extinguishers and fire blankets. Oyu Tolgoi also donated two fire extinguishers and two fire blankets to each school.
School principals and social workers say the training was very productive and thanked Oyu Tolgoi for the initiative. The training was one of many community safety activities organised by Oyu Tolgoi Procurement during 2014.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), between eight and 18 fires ignite each day in Mongolia. As a result, one person dies each week and many more are burned and injured. Official statistics indicate that fires cause MNT45 million of damage each day.
Oyu Tolgoi employees are encouraged to attend the company’s fire safety training and ensure they have a working fire extinguisher and fire blanket at home.
