The Trade Union Committee of Oyu Tolgoi LLC employees was established in August, 2010. Created on the initiative of Oyu Tolgoi employees, the committee has the purpose of protecting the interests of its members, improving their livelihoods, and representing and protecting their labour, social, professional and other interests. The union is organised on the basis of a district system according to its own internal regulations. It conducts its activities in accordance with the Mongolian Constitution.
About 70 per cent of members of the Trade Union Committee work at the mine, with the remaining 30 per cent living and working in Ulaanbaatar. The committee strives to protect the interests of these two groups of members who work and live in very different environments. The committee submits employee opinions and demands to the company management, works to address them together, protects the interests of its members within legal frameworks, reflects members’ opinions in collective agreements, and monitors their implementation.
The Trade Union Committee of Oyu Tolgoi LLC negotiated and signed collective agreements with the management of Oyu Tolgoi in 2011, 2012 and 2013. These agreements reflect many of the issues which are of interest to its members and employees in areas which are not covered by the Labour code and the company’s internal regulations and employment contracts. Negotiations take place based on proposals and requests submitted by members with these issues being addressed and agreements implemented. In addition to these collective agreements, the committee also raises the concerns of members during weekly meetings with senior management and the Administration and Human Resources departments.
The Trade Union Committee works as the voice of the workers, bringing them together voluntarily to raise concerns with the employer and address them within a legal framework.
