Today the Electricity supply agreement to supply long-term electricity from the Mongolian integrated grid to Oyu Tolgoi LLC has been executed between National Power Transmission Grid SOSC, National Dispatching Center SOLLC, Southern Region Electricity Distribution Network SOSC and Oyu Tolgoi LLC. Power is life-blood for Oyu Tolgoi mine and it now becomes even more important than ever to resolve the long-term power issue as the underground mine operation is just starting at this point in time. Having the power issue resolved, it not only ensures the people are kept safe and secure while deep underground and it is important for Mongolia’s economy that production from the mine is sustained.
N.Tavinbekh, Minister of Energy, stated “The resolving of Oyu Tolgoi’s long-term power supply marks an important achievement in the power sector of Mongolia. It also becomes a part of the big success between the Government of Mongolia and Oyu Tolgoi LLC which defines future development and operation of the mine”.
Armando Torres, Chief Executive Officer of Oyu Tolgoi LLC, stated “Through productive collaboration between the Government of Mongolia and Oyu Tolgoi LLC, an Electricity Supply Agreement for long-term power to the Oyu Tolgoi mine is being executed today. It will bring more values and benefits to Mongolia”.
Since 2013, the Government of Mongolia has been implementing measures to develop and put into operation the strategically important mineral deposits of the South Gobi, such as Nariinsukhait, Ovoot Tolgoi, Tavan Tolgoi, Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold deposits, Tsagaan Suvarga and Shivee Ovoo deposits.
In this context, the construction of a 670 km long 220kV (kilovolt) transmission line and three large 220 kV substations were completed in 2021 to supply these deposits from the domestic power system.
The Government has also decided to build a 450MW Tavan Tolgoi Thermal Power Plant on its own, which will replace the imported electricity from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China for Oyu Tolgoi mine.
