Geomandal is a pioneering national caterer

Learning experience and skills from the global level project

When Oyu Tolgoi exploration expedition first started working on site 15 years ago, Geomandal LLC built 10 gers and provided catering services. Therefore, the company received the title and certificate of first service provider.

Today, 15 thousand Mongolians are working for building the Oyu Tolgoi project. Hundreds of national companies are taking part in building of this unprecedented large project. One of the pioneering suppliers is Geomandal LLC. When Oyu Tolgoi exploration expedition first started working on site 15 years ago, the company built 10 gers and provided catering services. Therefore, the company received the title and certificate of first service provider.

Currently, Geomandal provides service at the North Camp of the Oyu Tolgoi site and is also engaged with construction activities. There are 60 staff permanently working at the construction project whereas 120-150 shift workers are based on the project site camp. During the past 15 years the company has gained great deal of experience in terms of running a camp. P.Naranbaatar, Procurement Manager of Geomandal LLC said, “We set up 5-6 field camps per year for both long and short terms in the territory of Mongolia. We gained experience and learned about health, safety and environment, which can be considered as western best practices”. With new knowledge, there is progress in the company’s operation. Thanks to working with larger international companies they have become more accountable for safe practices.

Camp catering is a relatively new type of business in Mongolia. Therefore it was challenging for the company to find skilled people in the beginning and they trained their own employees. As the manager mentioned, both managerial level employees and staff learned from the company they were providing services for. One of the most effective leverage to retain skilled workforce is a right incentive system. Geomandal implements this system well in its operation which makes their employees satisfied with their salary.

Geomandal LLC aims to take part in building of Oyu Tolgoi project and wants to exceed their current level and contribute more in the development of the country.
