Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – The opening ceremony of the fifth stage of Women’s FIDE Grand Prix was held at the Sukhbaatar Square, Ulaanbaatar city. Oyu Tolgoi is a sponsor for the tournament and Mongolian International Master (IM) Munguntuul Batkhuyag is one of twelve players in the tournament.
Head of Republic of Kalmykia, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov noted that the fifth stage of the Women’s FIDE Grand Prix is one of the strongest and most representative women’s international chess tournaments in the world, which is attended by four former Women World Champions – Maia Chiburdanidze, Antoaneta Stefanova, Zhu Chen, Xu Yuhua, as well as the leaders of the world chess rankings – Indian chess player Humpy Koneru and Chinese Hou Yifan.
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov said that holding of such a big tournament in Mongolia is an important step in the development and popularity of chess in Mongolia and the whole Asian region. He thanked the Mongolian Chess Federation for excellent organisation of the tournament.
IM Munguntuul Batkhuyag is one of the top women players of FIDE with the rating of 2,421. Oyu Tolgoi has been supporting Munguntuul since 2006 and during this period she has won several key international tournaments including the 2010 Asian Championships in Vietnam.
