Jobs are scarce in some of the communities near the Oyu Tolgoi mine site, but Oyu Tolgoi’s efforts to employ and source from these communities where possible providing opportunities to companies like Argali Het. Argarli Het is a garment shop based in Southgobi’s neighbouring Khanbogd soum and has been a supplier partner to Oyu Tolgoi since 2011.

When they commenced operations they had three employees who sewed their products. Once they commenced supplying Oyu Tolgoi they were able to secure a loan through the supplier support programme with which they bought new sewing equipment and materials. They now operate with eight sewers, one tailor and one assistant.

Training helps to make Argali Het a successful local supplier

Many of the local small and medium sized businesses are faced with the challenge of understanding and dealing with the financial and management requirements of a growing business. Suppliers such as Argali Het requested training from Oyu Tolgoi who then facilitated the relevant training, including pattern design, tailoring, finance, tax and accounting essentials for business owners.

D.Ariuntungalag, Director of Argali Het LLC said: “In order to expand our business, we first checked with the Labor and Social Welfare office at soum governor’s office and reviewed the community unemployment record – we recruited four people on that list.  Then we trained them through an apprenticeship and eventually employed them. We also hired additional labour from local Dalanzadgad soum of Umnugobi aimag.”

Local suppliers acknowledge Oyu Tolgoi’s contribution

D.Ariuntungalag says that the company now plans to establish proper manufacturing premises and that would not be possible without Oyu Tolgoi: “Oyu Tolgoi is working with us in various ways, not just from a procurement perspective. We are grateful to Oyu Tolgoi for their valuable contribution to our growth, development and future.”
