In 2010, Mongolian small business, Tsogt Orshikhui, was awarded the Oyu Tolgoi tender to supply work clothes. Originally, the company manufactured only one piece of clothing  – a safety jacket. Today Tsogt Orshikhui manufacture 12 different types of work clothes for Oyu Tolgoi, including shirts, trousers and jackets.

Motivating and employing more Mongolian nationals

When Tsogt Orshikhui began supplying Oyu Tolgoi they had only three employees and were operating in a low-income Ger district. Two years later and the company now employs nine professional workers and operate out of a leased building.

The company incentivises employees who get paid more as they produce more with the average salary being a respectable 800,000 MNT.

Tsogt Orshikhui Director Ch.Bayasgalan is excited about the company’s plans to expand: “We are growing rapidly, planning to purchase our own property and hire 7-8 more employees who specialise in work clothes. Last year, we supplied work clothes to a Rio Tinto mine in America. We are extremely proud that work clothes we produce meet an international standard and are exported abroad.”

Knowing how the customer uses their product is important

Tsogt Orshikhui look for ways to improve their product whether that be through the purchase of new equipment to increase uniform production and improve the quality of their products and packaging.

The uniform makers also visited Oyu Tolgoi site and witnessed how the clothes are being used and worn ‘first hand’ by the mine personnel in order to improve the quality of their product. On top of producing uniforms, the company also acts as an agent for other South Gobi sewing suppliers.
