Update on Oyu Tolgoi fire

Oyu Tolgoi, Umnugobi – On March 15, 2011 Oyu Tolgoi announced that there had been a fire in the head frame of the No. 2 Shaft. At that time, the company indicated it would provide an update on developments.

The investigation of the fire has now been completed by both the police and Oyu Tolgoi’s internal investigation team.

The internal investigation has shown that the fire started as a result of hot metal and sparks from welding falling onto insulation blankets. The workers had all left the area before the wind ignited the material. The company’s investigation has resulted in a range of changes in procedures to ensure that such an event will not occur again.

There were no injuries during the fire and there will be no impact on the commencement of production.
