Agreement on Preventing HIV/AIDS/STD in the mining sector signed between Oyu Tolgoi LLC and the Mongolian Employers’ Federation

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – A Memorandum of Understanding on preventing HIV/AIDS in the mining sector was signed today between Oyu Tolgoi LLC and the Mongolian Employers’ Federation.

The HIV/AIDS Prevention Project is run by the Asian Development Bank and supported by the Mongolian Ministry of Health, the Deputy Prime Minister’s Working Group and the Mongolian Employers’ Federation. The aim of the project, which has run since 2008, is to raise awareness of the ways to prevent HIV/AIDS.

Oyu Tolgoi and the Mongolian Employers’ Federation will work to position Oyu Tolgoi as a ‘role model organisation’ within the project.

Oyu Tolgoi’s responsibilities include setting up and operating a voluntary counselling and testing centre at the mine site, which also conducts training and education. Oyu Tolgoi is responsible for providing medical equipment, diagnostic devices and drugs, in order to screen mine workers.

Cameron McRae, CEO of Oyu Tolgoi, said: “We are proud to sign this memorandum and we look forward to working closely with the Mongolian Employers’ Federation to train and educate our workforce in the ways to prevent HIV, AIDS and STDs. Oyu Tolgoi takes its responsibility towards the health and safety of all its employees very seriously and this project will be a valuable part of our commitment to protect everyone who works for us.”
