Since May 2011, Oyu Tolgoi has been working with Maxam, a Mongolian explosives supplier. Thanks to Maxam’s explosives, Oyu Tolgoi celebrated 1,000,000 tonnes of rock blasted in December 2011.

About Maxam

Maxam was formed in Mongolia in 2006 and has grown consistently to 29 employees in early 2012.

Of these 29 employees, 26 are Mongolian nationals and three are expatriates. Maxam’s approach is to hire expatriate personnel on short term contracts only in order to train its Mongolian workforce.

Maxam runs an exchange program between universities in Mongolia and the Politecnica de Madrid in Spain.

Oyu Tolgoi shares this approach to investing in education and training in Mongolia. Our graduate scholarship programme sends 120 students at Mongolian universities and 30 Mongolian students at international universities annually.

Social responsibility at the centre of corporate philosophy
