Press release: Whereabouts of wild ass (Khulan) reported every hour

– Satellite transmission collars placed on 20 wild asses –

Oyu Tolgoi pays close attention to the effect of mining on the wild life in the Gobi. The company is currently working with the Wildlife Conservation society and Austrian experts to place collars with satellite transmission and GPS on 20 wild-asses.

As a result, it will be possible to track the movement of the wild-ass herds and study the factors that affect and restrict their movement.

S.Dorjderem, Principal Advisor Biodiversity for the Environmental department at the Oyu Tolgoi LLC said: “Oyu Tolgoi is carefully studying the migration of wild-ass herds in South Gobi where mining is developing rapidly and infrastructure and roads are under construction. This work can make a valuable contribution not only to the environmental protection efforts of one company, but also to development of national level wild-ass protection planning.”

The collars have been fitted on ten animals around the Oyu Tolgoi site with and another ten in Khatanbulag soum of Dornogobi aimag. In total, these include 13 stallions and seven mares. The collar provides updates about its location each hour through satellite links. After two years, the collars are designed to fall off naturally. At this point, it will be picked up allowing experts to obtain additional information about behavior and the animal’s daily activities. The collars will also inform, at fifteen minute intervals, when the Khulan come within five kilometres of major roads in the area.
