Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Oyu Tolgoi LLC began preparing its work force in 2010 and has enrolled its first 100 employees in vocational courses including Concentration Plant Operation, Heavy Equipment Operation and Heavy Electrical Equipment Operation at the Erdenet School of Vocational Technology. To date the number of trainees has reached over 400.

Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine is one of the largest projects in the world and aims to bring innovative techniques and cutting edge technology to the business. This requires special job placements after providing occupational training for its staff. Therefore, Oyu Tolgoi provides vocational trainings both locally and overseas with apprenticeship positions at large-scale mines across the globe. Through a selective screening process among the attendees of the Concentration Plant Operation courses at the Darkhan and Erdenet Technological Institutes, 8 students and 4 coaches were awarded apprenticeships at the Kennecott Copper Mine in Utah, USA from April of this year. The students will receive a one month on the job training and then return and work in the Concentrator Plant at Oyu Tolgoi.

Enkhbaatar Demchig, Training Superintendent of Oyu Tolgoi, states “It is going to be highly valuable for our trainees to apprentice in a world class mining project because they will learn best health and safety practices as well as effective environmental management practices. The students will certainly come back with improved inter-disciplinary knowledge.”

Upon the opening of the Oyu Tolgoi mine, a total of 3,500 people will be employed, 90 per cent constituting Mongolian nationals with a 10 per cent expatriate force. From this required staff, the project is facing the challenge of training and coaching thousands of nationals, therefore Oyu Tolgoi has made it a top priority to implement this Vocational Education Program and thus far it has been very successful.
