– The mine offers this opportunity for students on Oyu Tolgoi scholarships –
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – To study without having to worry about school tuition fees, housing cost and living costs is a dream. Oyu Tolgoi has been providing this opportunity to Mongolian students through its national scholarship programme for a number of years now. In 2010, Oyu Tolgoi signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and agreed to provide scholarships to over 200 university students between 2010 – 2015. So far, exactly 100 students have received Oyu Tolgoi scholarships. The scholarship application is open to any Mongolian student who studies full time in a two – four year course at an accredited Mongolian university, majoring in mining, metallurgy, minerals concentration, geology, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry, natural environment, construction engineering. The students must maintain a GPA of over 3.2 and not have received any other scholarships. The Oyu Tolgoi scholarship covers their annual tuition fee, dormitory costs and the students also receive 200,000 MNT each month for living costs. The students also have the opportunity to intern at Oyu Tolgoi. Yo.Lkhamaa, training specialist in the Oyu Tolgoi Human Resources department said, “we have about 70 students interning at the company each year. We evaluate their internship performance as the aim of the internship is to confirm their theoretical knowledge and build their practical experience.”
Interning at a world-class mine provides students with the opportunity to learn advanced technological processes from highly qualified specialists. We met with some of the Oyu Tolgoi scholarship students who recently interned at the mine. They gained first hand, practical training and experience with the latest equipment and technology. Mongolians say, “if one does their best, fate is good to them.
D.Baasandorj: I study at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology, majoring in Mining Technology. I interned as assistant to the senior supervisor of the concentrator. The concentrator workers shared their knowledge and skills without any reservation. The mine ensures safety at the highest standard. Intern students are not asked to do anything unrelated to their professional field. All work is done according to appropriate rules and regulations. I learned a lot from the world-class mine. There are many facilities in the mine site for employees to spend their free time and Oyu Tolgoi supplies work uniforms and all provisions. I am studying a four-year course. My dream is to graduate from university and then work at Oyu Tolgoi.
T.Erkhembayar: A native of Undur-Ulaan soum of Arkhangai province, T.Erkhembayar studies at the National University of Mongolia majoring in Exploration and Reserve Geology. He interned at the open pit mine and geological department at Oyu Tolgoi. He says, “I had never visited a mine before and I learned a lot while interning at Oyu Tolgoi. They employ very experienced engineers. There are many benefits with the Oyu Tolgoi scholarship programme; my school tuition fees, dormitory fees and a monthly living fee of 200,000 tugrug are covered. I also get attend many Leadership and English language courses.”
