Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Oyu Tolgoi prefers to work with Mongolian suppliers and works with international suppliers only when there is no alternative. By working with Oyu Tolgoi, international suppliers are obliged to work with Mongolian businesses, contribute to local development and improve project benefits for Mongolia, as well as supplying products and services.
Transwest LLC is one such company. This company is an authorized distributor of Komatsu equipment and other brand products. Within the framework of the strategic partnership with Oyu Tolgoi, Transwest also implements vocational training programs to train world-class technicians who are recognized by international standards. In order to achieve this goal, the company has two fully equipped classrooms at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST). It is also working with the Mechanical Engineering School of MUST to implement a joint-training program to train heavy-duty technicians. So far the company has trained 30 students as mechanics-sales personnel. Transwest is planning to train a further 40 Mongolian nationals. Due to its efforts in training Mongolians to become world-class technicians, the Government of Mongolia has acknowledged that Tranwest’s training center is the first foreign invested center of its kind in Mongolia.
Transwest employees at the Oyu Tolgoi project site are fully enrolled in the Safety Training Program of the Alberta Construction Safety Association in Australia. The company ensures that its personnel are trained and successfully launched the development of vocational training centers, fully equipped with modern equipment and technology.
Transwest trains Mongolian youths as heavy duty equipment technicians and provides jobs. It has also established a training facility where Mongolian and international specialists train Mongolians. Transwest’s vocational training combines theory and practice and allows continuous development of professional skills and knowledge.
Transwest Mongolia is implementing many programs to contribute to the development of Mongolia. It created 160 new jobs last year alone, enabling many households to receive a source of regular income. 90% of Oyu Tolgoi’s workforce will be Mongolia when operations begin. Oyu Tolgoi supports its suppliers which in turn creates jobs for Mongolians.
Oyu Tolgoi rewards its international suppliers that exceed their contractual obligations by extending their contracts and including them in the “preferred suppliers” category.

At least 9 out of 10 employees will be Mongolian once the mine is in production and Oyu Tolgoi is investing US$58 million dollars (78 billion MNT) in training and education and an additional US$27 million dollars (36 billion MNT) in the Workforce Employment Project designed to help address the general skills shortage in Mongolia
