– Road signage, billboards and wastebins have been installed –
Umnugobi, Mongolia – Khanbogd soum of Umnugovi aimag has many locations with natural, historical and cultural landmarks. In recent years, this soum has witnessed rapid mining development and increased population inflows. As a result, these landmarks need protection. Khanbogd soum’s Governor’s Office, the environment inspector and Cultural heritage protection programe of Oyu Tolgoi LLC have jointly installed road signs, billboards and wastebins in locations with historic and cultural landmarks frequently visited by locals and tourists. These include areas such as Bayajihyn cave, Demchog, Tsagaan tolgoi monastery and Javkhlant khairkhan mountain.
Khanbogd soum environment inspector O.Namjilmaa said: “Previously, these locations lacked wastebins, so people threw waste wherever they wanted, polluting the environment. Now there are waste bins in place which will be emptied regularly.”
Another problem is that tourists who visit landmark locations often don’t know local roads and get lost, creating new dirt tracks, ruining soil and disturbing local residents. To solve this problem, road signs and signage clearly indicating routes to landmark locations have been installed.
The road signs, billboards and waste bins were produced and installed by Anir Khur, a company based in Khanbogd.
