– Oyu Tolgoi supports the State initiative to provide scholarship for student who have qualified for world’s top 100 universities –
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Today three students were awarded international scholarships sponsored by Oyu Tolgoi. The company made the formal announcement during an event co-organised by the Ministry of Education and Science to highlight investments in the education sector.
Oyu Tolgoi is making a significant investment of MNT 168 billion to support and develop the education sector as part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in 2010. As part of this investment, the company has expanded and upgraded several technical and vocational education and training centres across the country, improved professional training for technical and vocational education teachers, and provided domestic and international scholarships for students.
L.Udval, Talent Advisor at Oyu Tolgoi said “Our investment goes far beyond just mining. We have been investing in real people and talent at the same time Oyu Tolgoi mine develops. Since 2010, we have granted 135 domestic and 20 international scholarships on our own initiative. But today’s scholarship award is unique as our cooperation with the Ministry supports the state initiative to provide scholarships for students who have qualified for study in the top 100 global universities.”
Two of the three students who qualified will receive full scholarships under Oyu Tolgoi’s international scholarship programme, while the third student’s tuition fees will be paid by the Government and Oyu Tolgoi will finance living expenses.
B.Urgamaltsetseg, the vice minister for the Education and Science said “I would like to express deep gratitude to our Oyu Tolgoi partners. You have demonstrated significant investment not only constructing new schools and giving scholarships, but also training and educating teachers from vocational training schools. Recently, the Government has transferred the school building in Nalaikh to the German-Mongolian school. It was built by Oyu Tolgoi. It is our pleasure to work with you for the greater future of Mongolia.”
Oyu Tolgoi has committed to granting 200 domestic scholarships and 30 international scholarships. Three recipients have already successfully graduated and returned to Mongolia under the international programme

- Oyu Tolgoi is making an investment of MNT 168 billion to support and develop the education sector as part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in 2010.
- In addition to construction, expansion and upgrade of technical and vocational education and training centres, this financing also includes significant investment in the education sector such as professional training for technical and vocational education teachers and domestic and international scholarships for students.
- Since 2010, the company has constructed and commissioned the new “Mining School of Excellence” in Khanbogd, expanded the Darkhan Polytechnical college building and upgraded its dormitory building, and constructed the Gobisumber Polytechnical college building extension and renovated and commissioned its dormitory building.
- The company also built the ”Technological School of Excellence” in Nalaikh district which includes 6,000 square metres of classrooms for 450-600 students and 2,500 square metres of student dormitories for 170 people. On 4 May, 2013, the school complex was transferred by Government decree to the Mongolian-German Joint School of Technology.
- In addition, the company will build the first building of the “Mining School of Excellence” in Dalanzadgad soum in Umnugovi aimag. On 10 October, 2013, Minister of Education and Science and Minister of Labour proposed to establish a “Mining School of Excellence” there to train engineering and technical staff, and this proposal was supported and agreement was made to turn it into model school of excellence and research centre complex for mining operations in cold climates.
- In addition to construction of school facilities, Oyu Tolgoi LLC has also provided school equipment worth some MNT 3.2 billion to 27 technical and vocational education and training centres in Mongolia, and worked to train 2,400 teachers for TVETs, establishing a professional training centre for them.
