– Language and business training helps locals gain employment with Oyu Tolgoi and its suppliers –
Khanbogd, Umnugobi – 31 local graduates today celebrated the successful completion of their six months English training course. At the graduation ceremony attended by D.Munkh-Erdene, Deputy Governor of Khanbogd, many residents praised the training that improved their future prospects in the labor market.
Oyu Tolgoi is sponsoring the Pre-Employment support programme for the second year. It is a key part of its long-term commitment to support local socio-economic development. In 2012, the programme enrolled residents from Khanbogd soum and was this year expanded by programmes in Manlai and Bayan-Ovoo soums. Oyu Tolgoi is to offer additional programmes over the next six months that can supplement this training and provide additional skills to support Umnugobi citizens in getting meaningful employment.
During the ceremony Ms Buyandelger Tserendorj, one of last year’s graduates, said: “It gives me great pleasure to speak in front of you today, representing the first graduates. During the course of six months training we studied English, preparing for interviews and job readiness trainings. The programme gave all of us great opportunities. I for example was contacted by CAML, an Oyu Tolgoi contractor, offering a document controller position, soon after my graduation.”
Michael Beck, Vice president of Oyu Tolgoi LLC, said: “At Oyu Tolgoi we recognise the importance of understanding the needs of the community and its people and we firmly believe in improving the quality of life in the communities we work in. The students in this programme participated in intensive English training, as well as job readiness training. We believe this training in combination with other programmes soon to be offered will open the doors to future job opportunities and provide the participants with the confidence and motivation they require to enter the workforce.”
There are only two languages in the world, one is English and the other one is other languages – this is what a Mongolian columnist Baabar had said. English is the language that every person today has to learn. This English language training course was indeed very timely. I would like to thank Oyu Tolgoi for supporting the programme, the teachers who conducted the training and the young people who attended the programme. I would like to wish that this training center, which today has successfully completed the programme and is holding its graduation ceremony, would become a major intellectual center spreading knowledge.
This programme is one very important element in Oyu Tolgoi’s overall efforts to provide education and training opportunities throughout the country. Oyu Tolgoi is investing US$126 million – that’s 168 billion MNT- in the vocational education system of Mongolia over 5 years.
In addition to building brand new vocational education centres in Nalaikh and Dalanzadgad, Oyu Tolgoi is upgrading and expanding four existing TVET schools in Dalanzadgad, Choir, Erdenet and Darkhan with modern training equipment.
