Opinions and initiatives of Oyu Tolgoi employees plays important role in the mine company decision on health, safety and natural environmental issues
Oyu Tolgoi is developing gold and copper mine in South Gobi region, the largest project in Mongolia implements various initiative and measures in order to ensure health and safety of its employees working in the mine and Khanbogd, Dalanzadgad and Ulaanbaatar branch offices.
One of the successful initiatives is setting up “Health, Safety and Environmental Council” directed at continuous improvement of health and safety of Oyu Tolgoi employees. One staff from each department of Oyu Tolgoi joined this council which was set up last year. Objective of the council is to support the mine to comply with Mongolian laws and regulations on safety, health and natural environment and help develop health and safety policies; monitor the policy implementation; promote health, safety culture among the employees.
All activities of the 13-member “Health, Safety and Environmental Council” is directed to improving health and safety of all employees of Oyu Tolgoi. For instance, the council organized cardiac diagnostic test for all employees with partnership with professional medical service providers. This allows Oyu Tolgoi to make decision to organize various health and sports events to improve overall health status and prevent cardiac diseases among personnel that work long hours in the office environment. Also Oyu Tolgoi is working with professional team of Mongolian University of Science and Technology to review request of the Oyu Tolgoi UB office personnel to install of pedestrian light on the main road outside the Oyu Tolgoi headquarters in Peace Avenue of Ulaanbaatar.
