Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – The Many organisations came together at the Mongolian national chamber of commerce and industry yesterday to host a discussion on finding a long term solution for the camel wool industry.
The discussion, sponsored and organised by Oyu Tolgoi, included representatives of the Ministry of Industry and Agriculture, the Intellectual property agency, Mongolian wool and cashmere association and the Textile institute, as well as producers including 'Sor', 'Gobi', 'Goyo' and 'Eermel'.
Local Government representatives and herders from Khanbogd, Bayan-Ovoo and Manlai soums of the South Gobi province also took part in the discussion aimed at finding a common solution to improve camel wool collection and processing. The event also looked at ways of increasing the number and variety of products made from camel wool and improving market competitiveness and demand.
Opening the discussion, Ts.Yansanjav, Deputy Chairman of the MNCCI said: “Oyu Tolgoi implements good corporate governance and acts as an example for other businesses.
Recently, Oyu Tolgoi invited representatives of about 30 companies who are members of our chamber to see the site. Thank you for initiating and sponsoring today’s discussion on camel wool which involves so many stakeholders.”
Presentations were made by Sh.Baigalmaa, Director of the Regional Development and Social Performance department of Oyu Tolgoi, B.Shinenemekh, advisor to Gerege Partners, Ts.Bayarmaa, head of Light Industrial policy implementation Department of the Ministry of Industry and Agriculture, G.Yondonsambuu, vice chairman of the Mongolian Wool and Cashmere Association, M.Erdenetuya, director of Sor Cashmere, and B.Ganbat, head of the Mongolian wool product producers association.
Presentations looked at camel wool value chain research conducted in the soums where Oyu Tolgoi operates and policy planning to overcome challenges and future trends by the Ministry of Industry and Agriculture.
Sh.Baigalmaa, Director of Regional development and social performance at Oyu Tolgoi said during her presentation: “Camel wool products, especially thosemade from baby camel wool, fall into the category of luxury products alongside cashmere. They have great potential to become one of Mongolia’s best brands and can represent Mongolia worldwide.” During the discussion a mini exhibition of camel wool and cashmere products were displayed to the public.
