Press release: Oyu Tolgoi recruits locally from Khanbogd soum

Recruits to become industry leading miners

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Oyu Tolgoi, a world leading mining company in Mongolia, operates in Khanbogd soum in the province of Umnugobi. The company aims to contribute to the socio-economic development of Khanbogd as well as the neighboring soums of Dalanzadgad, Bayan-Ovoo and Manlai in many ways and sees the importance of creating and developing sustainable relationships in the region.

Within this scope, we train and provide positions for local residents. Currently a total of 142 employees from Khanbogd soum are working for Oyu Tolgoi. They work in various areas including positions as workshop master, ventilation technician and heavy equipment operator. At the discretion of Concentrator management, namely Mr. Chelvan Veloo and Mr. Shawn Orser, 14 employees have been selected from Khanbog to work as 'Concentrate Samplers'. These employees will be taking samples from the different stages of the concentrator process and will then prepare those samples for concentration trials and chemical analysis.

The Concentrator department has already started organizing specialized trainings, skill development workshops and mine oriented trainings for all new employees. In particular, the engineers and technicians within the Concentrator department have organized safety inductions and mining operation and technology courses for the Concentrate Samplers. We interviewed the new employees at their training session on concentrate sampling practices and skills development inside the laboratory at SGS Mongolia LLC.

Ts. Enkhbayar: I’m a native resident of Khanbogd soum and graduated from the secondary school of Khanbogd and then from the National University in Ulaanbaatar. I saw an advertisement for Oyu Tolgoi LLC looking for new employees in May 2012. I applied and passed the test accordingly. The test was judged fairly. I’m so glad to have become an employee at Oyu Tolgoi. Attending these training sessions, I have gained knowledge on mining and occupational safety as well as introductions on the sample crushing and grinding equipment.

Kh. Sanduijav: I’m a native resident of Khanbogd soum and used to be a herdsman and private business owner since 2008. I was recruited by Oyu Tolgoi LLC on the 12th of this month. I knew a little about mining, but since I started working here I have attended trainings and learned so much. I’m pleased to be working for Oyu Tolgoi, the biggest and most promising mine in Mongolia. I’m so happy that I have stable income and work.

T. Gankhulug: I’m so glad that I will work for Oyu Tolgoi LLC. I passed a test in the beginning of May following an advertisement for Samplers at Oyu Tolgoi and was hired on June 12. I graduated from TVET in Umnugobi as a mining equipment operator but was unemployed for about a year in Khanbogd soum. I am currently attending trainings that combine theory and practice. I will use this opportunity for self-development and to further my learning. Since Oyu Tolgoi LLC fairly judges all applicants, I want to say there are so many opportunities for the youth of Mongolia to be recruited by the company.
