Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Oyu Tolgoi LLC is ending 2013 with many successes and accomplishments. These successes are justly recognised by many organisations. The Mongolian National Chamber of Industry and Commerce traditionally selects top companies, organisations and entrepreneurs in recognition of their real contribution to social and economic development. This year’s “ENTREPRENEUR-2013” awards selected Oyu Tolgoi LLC as one of the 'Top 10 companies of the year.' This prestigious award was given to Tserendagva Sodkhuu, Deputy Director for Government and Industry Relations of Oyu Tolgoi LLC who said “On behalf of all employees of Oyu Tolgoi, I would like to say that we are very pleased for selection of our company as one of the ‘Top 10 companies of 2013.’ For Oyu Tolgoi LLC, 2013 was a year full of successes and achievements. Many accomplishments can be named here, but some need special mention. Oyu Tolgoi produced its first copper concentrate in January and started shipments to international markets in July. Thus, by developing and bringing into the economy natural riches, the company made an important contribution to the further increase and rapid pace of social and economic development, improving the welfare of people. Oyu Tolgoi also obtained certification of the OHSAS 18001 international standard on occupational health and safety and the ISO 14001 environmental management standard which are considered as best international practice.”
Oyu Tolgoi is also considering safety as a priority in its mining operations and introducing best practices, methods and standards from the Rio Tinto Group. The first “Risk Demonstration Center” in Mongolia was commissioned at the mine site. Also a network of national suppliers was expanded and strengthened, and over 400 new suppliers were added in 2013. National and Umnugovi suppliers accounted for 76 per cent of all suppliers. In addition, large development projects were completed in South Gobi. With financing of 7.6 billion MNT, 40 km overhead power transmission lines from Oyu Tolgoi mine to Khanbogd town were completed and commissioned along with a sub-station facility. Work to build 5 km of paved roads in Khanbogd town was also financed, contributing to the improvement of road traffic and a reduction in dust levels.
