– Sponsorship for training and promotion of blood donation –
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Within its objectives of social responsibility, Oyu Tolgoi continues to support humanitarian causes and sponsors the ongoing 'Don’t Mind Helping to Save Lives' campaign in anticipation of World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The campaign activities commenced on 23 April and will last until 14 June. Under the motto of 'Every Blood Donor is a Hero' students from 8 major tertiary schools in Ulaanbaatar (NUM, NPU, MUST, AUM) as well as employees from Oyu Tolgoi’s Ulaanbaatar office voluntarily joined the 2012 WBDD campaign.
Oyu Tolgoi held a press conference yesterday where the tentative events within the campaign were presented to reporters and journalists. Michael Beck, Vice President of Human Resources and Capability Development stated that “Having sufficient reserves of blood and blood products in hospitals will save many lives. Oyu Tolgoi is always conscious of its social responsibility and so sponsors the humanitarian act of blood donation. Oyu Tolgoi is considered to be one of the first companies to introduce health, safety and environmental management software for this cause.”
The General Secretary of the Mongolian Red Cross Society, R. Samdandorj stressed that “We would like to say thank you to Oyu Tolgoi for supporting this humanitarian cause. As the project is known as the largest in the country, I believe that the youth working there are healthy and enthusiastic to contribute to our work by their generous, life-saving gift of blood. I also believe that Oyu Tolgoi encourages its peers to join in this campaign and make a positive difference in the country.”
Oyu Tolgoi presented awards to the two best donor organizations on National Donors’ Day for their priceless contribution to Mongolia’s social welfare. In addition, Oyu Tolgoi will award the leading educational institutes later this year as part of the campaign.
The Mongolian Red Cross Society and the Mongolian Students Association will help organize the campaign event under the motto 'Don’t Mind Helping to Save Lives'. They will be running awareness campaigns among the student population as well as bring doctors from the National Research Center of Blood Transfusion to their institutions for collecting blood donations.
According to the survey made by the World Health Organization, 3 per cent of a given population should regularly donate blood to keep up with demand for blood and blood products. Currently this ratio is only at .75 per cent in Mongolia.
