-Local residents of Khanbogd soum are involved several Oyu Tolgoi training programmes-
Khanbogd, South Gobi aimag – Oyu Tolgoi, the company developing the largest copper-gold mine in Mongolia, is implementing a major vocational training programme to increase the number qualified people in Mongolia’s workforce.
The programme is largest ever in the history of Mongolia and is funded by an investment of 110 Billion MNT (US$ 85 million) from Oyu Tolgoi LLC. As a part of this programme, Oyu Tolgoi will build 2 new vocational training centres and upgrade 3 existing vocational training centres.
In addition, funding will be provided for vocational teacher training, curriculum development and scholarships for promising students (both domestic and international). These projects are currently underway, and the vocational training centre in Khanbogd soum is expected to open in the second quarter of 2012.
The Human Resources department recently joined the Community Relations team and Khanbogd soum governor’s office to celebrate the completion of a 6-month programme which supported the skills development of local residents. Over 70 soum residents were involved in this programme which focused on improving English language skills, interviewing skills and general job readiness skills.
“This training was very fruitful. We want to thank Oyu Tolgoi for providing the opportunity for us to learn new skills and gain this knowledge,” noted J.Barmid, a local resident involved in the training program. “As result of the training, I improved my English language knowledge and was selected as ‘sampler’ for the open-pit mine at Oyu Tolgoi. I’m very happy.”

At least 9 out of 10 employees will be Mongolian once the mine is in production and Oyu Tolgoi is investing US$58 million dollars (78 billion tugriks) in training and education and an additional US$27 million dollars (36 billion tugriks) in the Workforce Employment Project designed to help address the general skills shortage in Mongolia
