– Twenty eight students from South Gobi receive scholarships –

Umnugobi, Mongolia – The regional development and social responsibility department of Oyu Tolgoi LLC runs a scholarship programme in the South Gobi. Now entering its ninth year, the programme was established in 2005 to meet local demand for education. The programme aims to support the human resources development policies and programmes of Umnugovi aimag by enrollings capable students and young people in priority social and economic areas. Those taking part in the programme benefit from increased skills and experience to help them gain employment when they graduate and return home. Twenty eight students from 11 Umnogovi soums have received scholarships and graduated following their exams this year. The scholarship students and members of the programme management team recently toured Oyu Tolgoi site, to learn about the mine’s work.

University of Medical Sciences student N.Buyannemekh said: “I will be studying for the 4th year course this year after I gained a scholarship for the first time. This programme provides me with financial opportunities for study. The only thing I need to do is study and work hard.” Entry requirements for scholarship students require each student to score no less than a 3,2 average. They are then provided with full tuition fees and allowances for accommodation. The South Gobi scholarship programme is implemented jointly with the aimag Governor’s Office and the programme management team composed of representatives from civil society organisations. The management team for the programme works hard to ensure the programme runs smoothly. This includes the selection of students and monitoring the programmes implementation, as well as working with employers to identify job opportunities for graduates.

There are many people who after studying on scholarships have gained employment with local state organisations and private companies including Oyu Tolgoi. Z.Oyuntsetseg graduated after studying for three years on a scholarship and now is employed locally as a doctor and administrator at the Gurvantes soum clinic.

Over the last eight years, 215 students from Umnugovi aimag have received scholarships under the programme. 139 have already graduated while the remainder continue to pursue their studies successfully.
