Press release: Mongolia’s most modern engineering school opens

– Nalaikh facility will train world class engineers –

Nalaikh, Mongolia – Mongolia’s newest education facility was formally opened today, bringing huge opportunities to develop the next generation of highly trained, capable engineers and technical professionals.

Nailakh Engineering School, built with a US$ 10 million investment from Oyu Tolgoi will teach up to 600 engineering students, with a highly developed curriculum, developed by two German universities, Aachen University and Freiburg University.

The school will teach four main programmes, essential for mining and other industries in the country. These are mineral processing, environmental management, mechanical engineering, and process engineering.

The curriculum for the programmes, which will be taught alongside English language tuition, has been specifically developed by the two universities to ensure those who graduate from the school will meet international standards, and equipping them to work on projects across Mongolia, and around the world.

Speaking at the launch event, Deputy Minister of Education and Science, B. Urgamaltsetseg said "This school features an international school programme aligned with Mongolian needs. This school will train some of the most important specialists for Mongolia's future. It provides a comfortable environment to get a world-class education. The school building and a dormitory was built with Oyu Tolgoi’s investment and will educate high quality teachers and well-trained engineers.”.

Christine Ebelin, Officer of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation said "I would like to thank Oyu Tolgoi for financing the construction of this school. German teachers participated in the development of the curriculum so it will help introduce German education to Mongolia. Mongolian students will have an opportunity to become experts and contribute to the development of Mongolia."

Kern Von Hagen, Oyu Tolgoi’s Talent Pipeline Manager said: “We are delighted to formally launch the school today. Oyu Tolgoi is a project which will last for decades, so, like other mining projects, we will need highly trained professionals for many years to come. This school is just one part of the long-term commitment we have made to supporting education across Mongolia.”

Facilities also include a dormitory for 120 students and 50 staff. Oyu Tolgoi is currently in the process of completing transfer of the Nalaikh school to the relevant authorities.
