Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – A joint working group from the Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Population Development and Social Welfare and a non-governmental organisation of physically challenged persons recently visited the Oyu Tolgoi mine. The objective of this visit was to learn from Oyu Tolgoi’s experience in health and safety management policies, how they comply with international standards and how the experience gained can become a benchmark for other mining companies in the country. The visit was taken as part of the work being done by these ministries to make amendments to the law on social welfare of physically challenged persons.
J.Batkhuyag, Deputy Labour Minister, member of the joint working team said: “A key objective of this visit was to learn from Oyu Tolgoi’s experience in health and safety management. I think I can say that Oyu Tolgoi’s experience is a unique one which has been able to put in place an international class health and safety standard that can be applied at a small business unit to a major mining company. We are confident that Oyu Tolgoi will work with us and also support us in introducing this management standard at the national level and at other national companies.”
B.Narantuya, Head of Legal department at the Population development and social welfare ministry said: “The objective of this visit was to see how Oyu Tolgoi is complying with the law on health and labour safety. We visited the plants and the open pit at the mine, and also took part in a safety training session and we have seen for ourselves how the law on labor safety is being strictly complied with at the mine. We are happy that we got this opportunity to visit the Oyu Tolgoi mine as our ministry is trying to understand how to prevent industrial accidents.”
The joint working group of the ministries of labor, and population development and social welfare are happy with the health and safety policies being implemented by Oyu Togoi, the work being done in this respect and their outcome and are of the view that this experience of Oyu Tolgoi needs to be introduced at all other mining companies.
