Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – A hydro-geologist who has spent almost four decades dedicated to his field has been honoured by the President of Mongolia. Sanjdorj Samand, Oyu Tolgoi project Vice President was today awarded the title of 'Merited Industrial Worker of Mongolia' by presidential decree.
S.Sanjdorj has spent 39 years in the hydro-geology sector of the country, 15 years of which were working with Oyu Tolgoi. He has been recognised for his contribution to exploring and determining new water resources, including the discovery of the Gunii Hooloi aquifer – the sole source of water for the world class Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine, and for finding subterranean water sources in the Galbyn Gobi region in the south of Mongolia.
The Gunii Hooloi aquifer, which supplies the water requirements of Oyu Tolgoi mine was discovered by Oyu Tolgoi LLC. The Government of Mongolia has given Oyu Tolgoi permission to use only 20 per cent of the 6.8 billion cubic metres water reserve of Gunii Hooloi which is sufficient to meet the needs of the mine during the entire course of its life span. Oyu Tolgoi strictly complies with Mongolian laws and legislation and is introducing a world class, sustainable environment protection standard.
The entire workforce of Oyu Tolgoi is proud of its top notch senior experts and congratulates senior geologist Sanjdorj for this prestigious state award, the second for Oyu Tolgoi. The first recipient of this Mongolian state award was geologist D.Garamjav who was part of the team who discovered the Oyu Tolgoi deposit.
