– Oyu Tolgoi transfer overhead power lines and substation facility to power authorities –
Umnugovi , Mongolia – Today was a day of celebration for residents of Khanbogd soum in the Umnugovi aimag. Khanbogd was one of the few remaining soums left unconnected to central power supplies. Today, the issue of permanent source of power in the soum has been fully resolved.
Construction and testing work to link Khanbogd to Oyu Tolgoi mine’s power supply has now been successfully completed and the facilities were today transferred to the state power commission. The work included construction of two 40 km long, 35 kV overhead power lines and a substation.
The handover was marked today by a ceremony to transfer ownership of the facilities to the Southern Regional Power Distribution Network company. The construction was completed by Oyu Tolgoi who have signed a cooperation agreement to supply the company with power.
During the ceremony, G.Batsukh, Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Oyu Tolgoi LLC said: The histories of these close neighbours – Oyu Tolgoi LLC and Khanbogd soum – are linked forever. I am very pleased that today we are handing over the overhead power transmission line and substation built with Oyu Tolgoi investment to the state, aimag and local organisations.
I would like to express my thanks to the people of Khanbogd for the support that they have show for our work.”
D.Delgertsogt, State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy said: “This development, initiated and financed by Oyu Tolgoi LLC has a capacity of 110 kV. The current Khanbogd soum power use is 35 kV but the soum’s population is increasing constantly. On behalf of the Minister and Ministry of Mining I would like to express my gratitude to Oyu Tolgoi LLC for this work and for supplying Khanbogd soum with power”.
As mining rapidly develops in the South Gobi, the population and business needs of the region expands quickly. It is said that development and progress follow the lights, so Khanbogd residents will be pleased that opportunities now exist for further development of small and medium sized enterprises. This will help to increase the number of available jobs and improve living standards.
Work to build the overhead transmission lines and substation building was completed by Mongolian companies with a total investment of 7.6 billion MNT from Oyu Tolgoi. Construction was completed and the facilities handed over on time. The transmission lines have utilised modern design solutions including the installation of bird diverters, making it a sustainable facility.
