Press release: Govisumber college extension and student dormitory open

– 3.8 billion MNT investment brings college capacity to 950 students –

Govisumber, Mongolia – Education is crucial to the development of any nation. Oyu Tolgoi LLC is recognising this by investing 168 billion MNT in the Mongolian technical and vocational education sector.

As part of this investment, today improvements and an extension to Govisumber aimag Polytechnical college building were formally opened. The opening ceremony, which marked an investment of 3.8 billion MNT was attended by State Secretary of Ministry of Labor, Mr. P.Gantulga, Governor of Govisumber aimag, L.Odser, Govisumber aimag Polytechnical college director, G.Enkhbat and senior officials from Oyu Tolgoi LLC.

At the ceremony, Michael Beck, Vice President, Human Resources and Capability Development of Oyu Tolgoi LLC said “Today, Govisumber Polytechnic College becomes a Centre of Excellence for mining which will serve the whole region. The people of Choir should be proud that from today their town will become known for excellence in the industry. The young men and women of Choir will have the opportunity to become the future leaders of the Mongolian mining industry.”

Polytechnical college director G.Enkhbat said: “Our school is one of three Centres of Excellence which the Government of Mongolia and Oyu Tolgoi LLC are building as part of their joint programme to support technical education. A favorable learning environment in the fully equipped classrooms has been created. Another important step is the implementation of Oyu Tolgoi standards of safety within our work. We are aiming for our school to become recognised, not only in Mongolia, but in the whole region”.

As a result of this expansion, the college will have a capacity to train 950 students. A neighbouring building was purchased for a student dormitory and was fully renovated which improved living conditions for 250 students, allowing them to live in comfortable rooms, close to accommodation for 30 teachers. Today also marked the construction of a fully equipped gym, which will be used not only for the school’s activities, but also by local people when they hold aimag level sports events.

In a speech made at the opening ceremony, Governor of Govisumber aimag L.Odser said that at the time when Mongolia is opening up its treasures, the college will provide a valuable contribution to the development of capable, world-level mining specialists.

Construction of the Polytechnical college extension and dormitory building was undertaken by 300 Mongolian construction workers of 'UrnulProject' and 'BayanMarz' companies in accordance with Oyu Tolgoi safety standards.

Oyu Tolgoi LLC has already commissioned a Technical training centre in Khanbogd soum of Umnugobi aimag as well as extending facilities and construction of a student dormitory at the Polytechnical College of the Science and Technology University in Dakhan-Uul aimag. Investment has also been made for the Technology school in Orkhon aimag and a Technological School in Nalaikh district of Ulaanbaatar will soon also be commissioned. Technical and vocational education centress in 21 aimags have been provided with equipment and some 1,200 teachers trained. Students of these schools who have successfully completed studies and mastered their profession are already participating in large development projects like Oyu Tolgoi all over Mongolia.
