– Ulaanbaatar has a street with free-wi-fi internet connection thanks to funding and support from Oyu Tolgoi –
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – The opening of a new street in Ulaanbaatar was held yesterday evening. With financing and support from Oyu Tolgoi LLC, Student Street’s 3,000 square metres, stretching from the Mongolian State University of Education junction to the Central Sports Palace west junction has been fully upgraded. Ulaanbaatar city mayor E.Bat-Uul and Chairman of the Board of Oyu Tolgoi LLC G.Batsukh cut the ribbons at the opening of the new street. Ulaanbaatar municipal and district officials and management of the Oyu Tolgoi company also participated in the opening ceremony.
During the opening ceremony, E.Bat-Uul, governor and mayor of the capital city said: “On behalf of the capital city’s residents, I would like to express my gratitude to Oyu Tolgoi management and personnel who are contributing to improving Ulaanbaatar. Oyu Tolgoi improved one street of Ulaanbaatar through the investment of US$400,000. Most importantly, this is now the first street in Ulaanbaatar with a Wi-Fi connection.”
G.Batsukh, Chairman of the board of directors of Oyu Tolgoi LLC said: “Baga Toiruu street was improved using the latest technology and construction design. We installed LED lights and constructed a walkway, rest benches, trash bins and a free Wi-Fi network which any modern city would be proud of.
L.Amarzaya, Deputy Governor of the capital’s Sukhbaatar district: “Every single day, 30 to 40 thousand students go through this street. Oyu Tolgoi’s investment has been important in improving the environment for students on the way to university.”
The improvement work on the street was completed by the Mongolian Association of Urban Centres. Last April, Oyu Tolgoi signed a Memorandum of understanding on 'Partnership for Development' to address the need for social investment urgently required for the capital city from the private sector and other sources.
In line with this agreement, Ulaanbaatar Municipal office asked Oyu Tolgoi to improve the Baga Toriuu street. Oyu Tolgoi agreed and made the funding available. Oyu Tolgoi is making large social investments not only in the capital city, but also in Khanbogd, Manlai, Bayan-Ovoo, Dalanzadgad soums of Umnugobi aimag. Under this commitment, the company recently signed an interim cooperation agreement with the Khanbogd governor’s office to help develop the soum. One of the five main works outlined in the agreement , the paving of 5.1 kilometres of road within the soum centre has already started.
