– Mongolian youth fulfilling their dreams at Oyu Tolgoi –
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – The Oyu Tolgoi project is a pillar of Mongolia’s development and employment at the mine is the dream of thousands of the country’s youth and for many of them this dream has already become a reality. In 2010, Oyu Tolgoi recruited its first 100 employees and provided vocational training in Concentrator Operator, Electrician and Heavy Equipment Operator courses. To date, about 400 employees have been involved in these vocational courses. Starting from the 1 June, 32 young men were placed in their respective working positions upon completing the 1 – 2 years of vocational training.
B.Unurchimeg, one of the trainees, said “I majored in mining, however, after attending the corporate occupational courses, I am now a specialist in the mechanics of Concentrator equipment. I am the first female to graduate from this kind of training. Usually men do the mechanical jobs, but I like this work, so I believe I will do the job well and achieve success in this field. Oyu Tolgoi gives hope to many young people in Mongolia and supports them to fulfill their dreams.”
M.Tsendjav, another trainee, added “I came from Teshig soum in the Bulgan Province and passed an entry exam for Oyu Tolgoi in 2010. Then I enrolled in the two-year vocational training for Company employees from which I have graduated as an Electrician. Today, I am working as an Electrician in charge of electrical standard gauges and automatic electrical panels. The company funded everything related to the training and I am so grateful for all of their support and for being a part of the largest construction development project in Mongolia."
Oyu Tolgoi has developed a comprehensive, world-class mining sector training and education programme, the implementation of which has been funded by 110 billion MNT. Within the scope of this programme, 3 Technical and Vocational Education Institutes will be constructed, 4 similar institutes will be remodeled and all the necessary equipment and materials will be supplied. Furthermore, Oyu Tolgoi is planning to offer specialised training to 3,300 people and re-train 1,200 occupational teachers as vocational trainers to better prepare the national workforce for employment at Oyu Tolgoi. In addition, Oyu Tolgoi has provided scholarships for a number of students to study in domestic universities and at international tertiary schools.

Oyu Tolgoi LLC is Mongolia's largest copper and gold mining company and is a strategic partnership between the Government of Mongolia (34 per cent stake), Ivanhoe Mines (66 per cent) and Rio Tinto. Oyu Tolgoi is committed to contributing to a sustainable future for Mongolia. At least 9 out of 10 employees will be Mongolian once the mine is in production and Oyu Tolgoi is investing US$58 million dollars (78 billion MNT) in training and education and an additional US$27 million dollars (36 billion MNT) in the Workforce Employment Project designed to help address the general skills shortage in Mongolia
