Press release: Construction team of Oyu Tolgoi achieved 10 million man hours without LTI

Evidence of introducing the world’s best standard of safety

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – Oyu Tolgoi brings up the best safety standards of the global mining practices and pursues work safety under the motto 'Let’s create a work place, where everyone can go home safe at the end of each day!'

The motto has been successfully implemented in all stages and sites of the operation. Evidence of this is the construction team of the overall project has hit 10 million consecutive hours without a LTI since 2 February 2012.

Before this accomplishment, and as a subset of the overall group, the concentrator construction team hit 10.4 million hours without a LTI; a streak that started on 4 June 2011. This incredible achievement shows that the best global mining safety standards have been in place while the construction progressed at a fast pace.

Other companies winning streaks include TCC on Shaft 2 (and other work) at 2.2 million hours without an LTI, CMTCC in the concentrator at 4.8 million, and JDCC with a contractor record of 7.2 million hours, relatively.

Equally impressive, we have 39 Mongolian contractors working in construction that contributed to these latest records. 33 of these Mongolian companies have never had an LTI while working on the project. Such safety records were unprecedented with the national companies.

Oyu Tolgoi LLC implements and promotes safe work practices at all times with both employees and contractors.

Steve Garcia, Vice President of Oyu Tolgoi LLC notes that Oyu Tolgoi’s main focus is on the occupational safety and health of its staff. “This particular accomplishment is impressive, worth celebrating and needs to be continued with the goal of ending the job with a strong safety focus. Please share this accomplishment with your teams, contractors and others,” he said.
