Umnugobi, Mongolia – On 23 January, CEO and President of Oyu Tolgoi LLC Craig Kinnell visited the Ger of culture and tradition at the Oyu Tolgoi mine site. The ger is operated by Khanbogd Seniors association. During the visit, Mr Kinnell met with soum elders and engaged in a warm discussion.
Craig Kinnell arrived wearing a traditional Mongolian deel garment as a sign of respect to the guests. Even though he only recently arrived in Mongolia and hasn’t yet had a chance to learn all Mongolian traditions, he welcomed guests with a traditional zolgolt greeting; exchanging snuff bottles, tasting traditional plates and listening to a morin khuur performance. Elders were highly impressed with their meeting with the new CEO and gave him a detailed explanation of the deels worn by locals, Mongolian traditional shoes, loovuz fur hats and morin khuur fiddles.
At the end of the meeting, five Khanbogd soum senior citizens with were presented with Tsagaan Sar plates. Eight members of Khanbogd soum Senior’s Association who operate the 'Ger of culture and tradition' were also presented with gifts.
Craig Kinnell thanked the local elders for the opportunity to learn about life and the traditional customs of nomadic herders in the Gobi desert and expressed willingness to learn even more in the future. He also called on all Oyu Tolgoi employees to visit the ger to acquaint themselves with rich local culture.
