– Oyu Tolgoi has invested more than 1 billion MNT in the Bayan ovoo sport hall –
Bayan-Ovoo, Umnugobi – Bayan-Ovoo soum now has a modern sports hall where the local school can hold physical education classes, children can spend free time this summer, and the soum can host regional sporting competitions. Oyu Tolgoi built the facility to replace the old sport center at the request of the Bayan ovoo soum governor and the soum school director as part of the mining company’s commitment to improve especially the lives of people in South Gobi.
Mr. Kh.Batbold Bayan-Ovoo soum Governor, speaking at today’s opening of the sport hall said: “Our soum’s old sport hall was in such a state that we could not use it any more, owing to safety reasons. We approached Oyu Tolgoi and today we have a modern sport hall for which the entire soum is happy and thankful as we see this as a major investment in promoting the health of soum people.”
Oyu Tolgoi invested more than 1 billion MNT or the equivalent of almost US $700 thousand to build the complex. The centrally heated sport hall is 30×18 metres has a storehouse for sport equipment, changing and restrooms, rooms for PT teachers, a fully-equipped training room as well as a tennis court and the floor is by Gerflor from France. All this makes it possible for Bayan-Ovoo soum to host national as well as regional level sport competitions.
Ms. Ts.Narantuya, Director of Bayan-Ovoo school, which will be managing the sport hall, said “Our school children and young people of the soum now have some place where they can spend their free time meaningfully. We can also now host regional level sport competitions which is clearly an advantage.”
The indoor sport hall by designed by a Mongolian company ’Conconsulting’ and built by another Mongolian company ‘Macadam', and all construction was completed in compliance with Oyu Tolgoi's strict safety standards. Relevant authorities have given the permission to open the sport hall to public. With the new indoor sport complex functional, the inhabitants of Bayan Ovoo and most importantly, young people and children of the soum will have one place to spend their free time in a meaningful manner. The sport hall in Bayan-Ovoo is one of many examples of what Oyu Tolgoi is doing to promote regional development.
