Oyu Tolgoi LLC organises “Made in Umnugovi” expo

Dalanzadgad, Umnugovi aimag – Oyu Tolgoi, Umnugovi Governor’s Office and Business Innovation and Growth Centre (BIG) successfully organised a small and medium-sized enterprise expo, themed “Made in Umnugovi”, in Dalanzadgad on 23-24 of May, 2019. Representatives from 15 different mining companies operating in the Umnugovi region took part in the expo to explore opportunities on further expanding partnership opportunities, specifically, procuring goods and services of more than 100 participating companies’ of Umnugovi.

During the event, Oyu Tolgoi, as part of its “Made in Mongolia” strategy, signed a number of procurement contracts, amounting to a total of US$10.5 million (MNT 27.8 billion), with nine local companies as part of our strategy to of support small and medium-sized enterprises and local job creators. One of the companies that signed a contract with Oyu Tolgoi is from Manlai soum, and this is the very first company to represent the soum. These nine contracts will create 128 jobs for the community.

Mr. S. Munkhbayar, Deputy Governor of Umnugovi, highlighted during his opening remarks that “You can see the realcontribution Oyu Tolgoi is making to the prosperity of the local social and economic development while creating thousands of jobs, as most of the participants of this expo are either suppliers or contractors of Oyu Tolgoi.” Additionally, Umnugovi Governor’s Office held training and discussion sessions aimed to strengthen the capacity of small and medium-sized enterprises within the entrepreneurs and local government officials.

Derrick Hansen, General Manager of Oyu Tolgoi’s Procurement department said: “Oyu Tolgoi has a strong focus in developing a safe and competitive local supply chain where small and medium-sized enterprises play a critical role. With support from the Umnugovi province and the BIG Centre, we are confident that we will continue to improve the local supply chain.”One of the highlights of the expo was the opening of the Umnugovi branch of the “Business Innovation and Growth Centre”, jointly established by Umnugovi aimag, GIZ, Gobi Oyu Development Support Fund and Oyu Tolgoi LLC. With the help of the BIG Centre, Umnugovi entrepreneurs will be able to receive various trainings and business management training sessions that are essential to create successful businesses. The focus areas are environment, health and safety, business ethics, business administration and supply chain management.
